De Young Museum Pole #3

12 Nov

We walked down the street to a pole near the pond on the side of The De Young Museum. It was right at a crosswalk where the taxis drop people off to go to the museum. I think we offered them some unexpected entertainment. The Russian knit this piece, she likes to knit very complicated pieces with a lot of color. I  hand spin most of the yarn on my spinning wheel, we use about 70 to 80 different colors. Maybe 100.

Do you see the sphinx in the back of the picture? I never noticed that there were sphinx at The De Young until today. The world has so much detail we don’t notice. You see some interesting details when you stand in place sewing knitting onto a pole that you might not see otherwise.

It was especially pleasant talking to passers by today. We always tell them that this is a kind of street art called yarn bombing, that we  have  have put pieces up all over the East Bay { 60 so far ], and that we were installing in Golden Gate Park because it is so beautiful. After we were done we went into the cafe at the museum. Their cookies have really improved.

I knit this pole. When we get done with this project I’m going to call it 500 things to do with a knitted ruffle.

We walked across the street from The De Young Museum and started sewing this yarnbomb on a very nice pole that said Japanese Tea Garden on it. We could hear the fountains splashing and a man playing a guitar.A man  went by saying  “This is very European” . We were standing in the shrubbery.

A man in a blue truck yelled “Do you have a permit?”

“No’ I said ” We don’t need one” I was thinking -this is streetart, of course we don’t have a permit. He was unhappy. He drove away, we kept sewing.

A young man and his female friend stopped and said “We ‘ve seen your work all over , we really like it”.  I was sitting on the ground .They introduced themselves. “What is your name? ” they asked my young associate. A long pause. I held my breath.

“The Russian” she finally said.

We decided to start yarn bombing in Golden Gate Park. I was so excited that I could hardly sleep. I wanted to get up and get right in my truck and drive to the park and walk all around it looking at trees and poles. But there are so many odd tasks to take care of first, sorting through a big bag of knitted pieces and deciding which ones to take, packing a bag with 10 different colors of wool to sew up the pieces with, picking out paper,  fabric and laminate streetcolor.wordpress.com labels, making a thermos of tea, packing trail mix, warm clothes, 3 pairs of sunglasses, plying yarn for today’s knitting project, printing out a map of Golden Gate Park- I decided to just skip the yoga.

It’s so great to get in your car for an adventure. You really could drive anywhere. The Bay is so beautiful and so full of interesting yellow and red giant cranes. To just decide on the spur of the moment to spend a day in Golden Gate Park- is there anywhere more beautiful? I parked at the Conservatory of Flowers which was brilliantly white and glowing at noon. The lawns were mowed and smelled dark green . I  walked in the cool shadowy street over to The De Young. Very nice signs everywhere about The Van Gogh  Show.

I met The Russian by the pond and we started yarn bombing. This piece was knit by The Russian and the ruffle rings on it have a lot of gesture. The knitting always look so bright and fresh when we first put them up . A woman stopped and said ” These are a lot fancier than the ones we have in Berkeley” .
