Yarnbombing Berkeley -Tie Dyed Tree # 2

16 Oct

blue tiedyed tree 2I was having a lot of trouble getting myself to put up my tie dyed felts on the trees of Berkeley. I kept wondering what would get me to start. Time was passing and it was getting closer to our rainy season when it would no longer be reasonable to hang felt outside.

So I tried scolding myself ” Don’t be a weenie ! ” I would say every morning. That never works.

So I thought about how I could support myself and make smaller goals. I decided to load all my sewing gear, cameras , step ladder and duffel of felt into the back of my ancient Isuzu Trooper so that I would have it all if I got the urge to vandalize. Than I told myself that I could just go and try out the felt on a tree, no sewing. Then I finally started putting them up.

I seem to be able to put up one tree a day. I sew them up at night. It’s very balmy at night here in Oct and I listen to the crickets .This is my second  tie dyed tree  on Solano and Colusa.

Yarnbombing The Planet – Nov 2012

7 Dec

Here we have 37 yarnbombed bollards in Madrid created by the wonderful and productive Spanish yarnbomber Adriana Turmero on the occasion of her one year yarnbombing anniversary . Nov 2012

I love Adriana Turmero , she is a yarnbomb chroniclers dream . She works very prolifically in an original , recognizable style with her confident and beautifully balanced crocheted squares . She yarnbombs everywhere she goes { She was on vacation in Maimi recently and yarnbombed and then went on to Caracas and did the first yarnbomb in Venezuela that we know about . } And she writes all about it in Spanish and English ! With dates and locations and every detail I want .

So here is an astonishing little detail – this whole installation was up for only a few hours and the city came and took it away . This news shook even such an experienced yarnbomber as myself.

” Oh Adriana ! ” I want to say ” Can’t you hide in wait and then run out and tear the yarnbombs out of their crabby little hands ? “

Adriana is so unfazed that when she made a video of this action she used a song that said

‘We won’t stop until somebody calls the cops and even then we will start again

And pretend that nothing ever happened .”

well that is strengthening .

And here we have 83 trees yarnbombed in red and white for Christmas in Geelong Australia by The Norlane Yarnbombers . Nov 18 2012 .

I love how aggressive and ambitious everyone is getting. I remember when I was so impressed that I yarnbombed  one pole .

Onto France – 700 seniors yarnbombed The Jardin des Plantes in Nantes France as part of The Recontes Autumn Nov 14 2012 . more here

When I wrote about this on Facebook someone asked me what a senior was . A senior is an older person .

What is so ironic about this for me is here in the states yarnbombing keeps getting called ‘ granny bknitting  ” or converseley written about as  ” Not Your Granny’s Knitting ” Well all this is so silly , every age likes to get together and eat cake and knit and crochet and then go out and dominate the town with it .

And finally here is ” Dancing With Wool ” at The Riverfront on the Waccamaw River in Conway , South Carolina . Up until Dec 1 2012 . more here

This was Lion Brand yarn , Create Conway , Conway Glass and Conway Downtown Alive !

There is a good story for this . Barbara Streeter owns Conway glass in Conway , S.C .  She had a friend yarnbomb a tree for her outside her shop . It was pink crochet I believe . Apparently there was a complaint and the city forced her to take it down .

So now several months later she helped arranged this very extensive and exhilarating lamp post yarnbombing installation , involving  and charming the whole city of Conway .

This is a very good revenge .

yarnbombing and The ” Assault on Zaragoza ” Spain

17 Sep

This is # 8 Liberty Street in the old quarter of Zaragoza  , Spain – yarnbombed on Thursday Sept 13 by 100 woman .
3 great Things About This

1 . This yarnbombing was one of 10 interventions done all over Zaragoza through ”  The Assault Festival of Street Art ” .  This was done with the cooperation of the city of Zaragoza who contributed 45,000 euros .

Funding ! Cooperation !  Recognition of yarnbombing as legitimate street art !  All very new and exciting.

2 . This is a huge yarnbombing . There are more than a thousand 20 x 20 squares. The wall of knitting and crocheting is 50 square meters. 1oo woman knit for almost 6 months to make this .

It was made only by woman .

There a re a number of  ” Urban Knitting   ” guerrilla yarnbombing groups in Spain in the cities of Zaragoza , Bilboa , Castellar and others and they often collaborate as they did for this yarnbombing .

3 .  The ministry of culture for Zaragoza described the intention of this yarnbombing was to build a more positive city through spontaneous art and color .

What does this mean that larger and larger groups of mostly woman are covering buses , entire buildings , entire towns with knitting and crocheting ? That this is being welcomed into the tough mostly male world of street art ? Welcomed by huge art festivals ?

Joy , passion , freedom and ambition are thrilling through these woman artists and they are making a world .

Montse Palacian said that the colors of this knitted installation had a particular meaning -

the light rich colors are to express joy and

the dark heavy colors are to express the fears and frustrations we all have .

I am very happy to hear yarnbombers start to talk about the power of their work  and it’s meaning . Yarnbombing is fun but it’s not trivial .

This part of the city  Zaragoza must be so intensely energized by all this knitting , time , effort , feeling and color.  It’s a new kind of house – the beautifully dressed up  house . Like making clothes for dolls , robes for statues of saints ,  ritual clothes for festivals . This is the power and protection that is put into a handmade object through a lot of time , concentration and devotion.

The textile becomes a spirit object.

Very  ,very interesting .
